L.P. Hornthal, Jr. is a native of Tarboro, NC, who has practiced law in Elizabeth City since 1965, specializing in civil litigation.  His excellence as a trial lawyer was confirmed by his admission as a Fellow in the distinguished American College of Trial Lawyers in 1986.  Mr. Hornthal has served in a leadership role in the legal profession for over 40 years, most notably as President of the North Carolina Bar Association in 1996 - 1997.  His contributions to the profession were recognized in 2012 by presentation of the North Carolina State Bar's John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award; and in 2011 by the J. Robert Elster Award for Professional Excellence presented from time to time by the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys to an attorney who exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and excellence. 

He was admitted to the NC State Bar in 1963, the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit in 1975, and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978.

Having served support roles in the North Carolina Supreme Court and in the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office, as well as playing key roles in oversight committees designed to protect the integrity of the legal profession, Mr. Hornthal’s remarkable career speaks for itself.
