Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, L.L.P. is one of the oldest law firms in continuous practice in Northeastern North Carolina, tracing its origins to 1906 in Elizabeth City. With offices in Elizabeth City, Nags Head and Columbia, NC, it is widely recognized as a leading law firm in this area of the state. Members of the firm have long held the highest reputations throughout the state. From its members have come two State Superior Court Judges, a current sitting Federal Judge, and Presidents of the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys. On a local level, members of the firm have occupied numerous leadership positions in the community.
HISTORY OF THE FIRM
J. Kenyon Wilson, Sr. began practicing in Elizabeth City in 1906 with the firm known as Thompson & Wilson. He later practiced with his son, J. Kenyon Wilson, Jr. in the firm of Wilson & Wilson from about 1941 until the senior Wilson's death in 1958. M. H. Hood Ellis joined the firm in 1975 and the firm became known as Wilson & Ellis. In 1920, J. Henry LeRoy started the Elizabeth City law firm that eventually became LeRoy, Wells & Shaw. In February 1979 the firm moved into its present building at 301 East Main Street in Elizabeth City. On October 1, 1985, the LeRoy and Wilson law firms merged. The new firm was named Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland. The law firm opened a branch office in Kitty Hawk in February 1989. In March 1991, the Kitty Hawk office was moved to its present location at 2502 S. Croatan Highway, Milepost 10, Nags Head. On August 1, 2005, Charles W. Ogletree of Columbia, NC merged his practice with Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, providing the firm with a third office to better serve clients in Northeastern North Carolina.

Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, LLP is a full service law firm, providing a broad range of services to individuals, businesses and governmental entities throughout Northeastern North Carolina. Lawyers with the firm are engaged in virtually every legal specialty, including real property, corporate and business, environmental, wills and estates, taxation, employment matters, insurance law, administrative law, banking, bankruptcy and a busy trial practice in areas such as personal injury, products liability, professional malpractice and insurance claims. In other highly specialized matters, such as patents and trademarks, the firm is able to refer clients to qualified specialists throughout the state and nation.
The firm is equally proud to serve local clients as well as some of the nation's largest corporations. The firm devotes the same care and concern to small matters as to large and complex ones.
The firm's real estate lawyers are skilled in residential transactions and commercial development matters. They represent lenders and borrowers in loan financing arrangements. They handle all zoning and land regulatory matters, and are approved attorneys for all major real estate title insurance companies in North Carolina. Robert Hobbs is Board Certified as a Real Estate Specialist.
Commercial and corporate attorneys in the firm advise and assist clients in forming a business, planning tax and financial strategies, and representing them before regulatory agencies. Likewise, lawyers in the firm are available to review individual needs ranging from the preparation of contracts and wills to counseling in bankruptcies.
Trial lawyers with the firm are admitted to practice in all state and federal courts up to the United States Supreme Court, and appear before administrative agencies as well. Many of the important cases tried in Northeastern North Carolina over the past several decades have involved lawyers from this firm.
STAFF AND FACILITIES
The Elizabeth City, NC office occupies a 9,500 square foot office complex which is specifically designed for a modern law practice. The office contains the latest in communications and computerized equipment utilized for word processing, legal research, billing and record keeping. The firm's law library is the largest and most complete in Northeastern North Carolina.
The firm's Nags Head, NC office was established to meet the legal needs of one of the fastest growing areas in the state. The Outer Banks office occupies a 3,000 square foot office building in Nags Head. The firm's Columbia, NC office resulted from the merger of the firm with the law practice of Charles W. Ogletree in 2005. The Columbia office is a 1,100 square foot office building located in downtown Columbia.
The firm's lawyers are supported by a staff of professional employees, including paralegals, and a number of experienced legal secretaries.
