Don Prentiss created the Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, L.L.P. Endowed Scholarship at College of The Albemarle

Don Prentiss, Attorney with Hornthal, Riley Ellis & Maland, L.L.P. and Amy Alcocer, Executive Director of the COA Foundation, sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the new scholarship on June 13, 2019.

College of The Albemarle (COA) Foundation announces a newly established scholarship for students enrolled in the college’s Criminal Justice Technology program.

Attorney Don Prentiss of local law firm, Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, L.L.P. (HRE&M), created the scholarship with an initial gift of $2,500.  The aptly named “Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, L.L.P. Endowed Scholarship” will be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Associate in Criminal Justice Technology program maintaining a 2.5 GPA.

As the endowment continues to grow, $500 from the initial gift will be awarded to a student recipient for Fall 2019.  This is the second scholarship endowment that the law firm has created with the Foundation.  The Regina Annette Peal Scholarship fund was founded in 1995.  High school graduates within Washington County who desire to enter COA’s nursing program are given preference to this scholarship, named after Miss Peal, who aspired to enter a career in nursing before being involved in a tragic car accident.

“HRE&M, L.L.P., has been a strong partner and advocate for COA for quite some time; from serving as instructors for the college’s first paralegal class to participating in the Alumni Connect initiative that recognized six COA alumni currently employed with the firm,” said Amy Alcocer, Executive Director, COA Foundation.  “Through their scholarships established within the COA Foundation, it is evident we share an appreciation for the importance of education.  These scholarships give our students the financial assistance to take classes that help them enter the workforce.  Thanks to the generous support of HRE&M, the COA Foundation is able to help even more students transform their tomorrow.”
